On Friday, November 21, NAPIPA, in partnership with Placer County District Attorney Morgan Gire and Sacramento County District Attorney Thien Ho, hosted an event celebrating the contributions and impact of Asian and Pacific Islander communities in Northern California. The gathering took place at High-Hand Nursery & Café in Loomis (Placer County), and was organized by NAPIPA members Jenny Ow and Danny Lee.
The event was a resounding success, drawing more than 60 attorneys from both offices. District Attorney Morgan Gire opened the program with historical reflections on the early 1900s, when Japanese farmers settled in the Loomis area. He discussed the difficult and often tragic experiences these families endured during World War II, noting that many were separated—some sent to internment camps, while others served honorably in the renowned 442nd Regimental Combat Team, an all Japanese American unit that became the most decorated in United States military history based on its size and length of service. Their motto “Go For Broke”, represented the soldiers’ determination to risk everything to prove their loyalty and earn respect. “Go For Broke” Road and a memorial to the 442nd is located just outside the Placer County DA office.
Sacramento County District Attorney Thien Ho, who recently announced his candidacy for California’s 6th Congressional District, spoke about the history of the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office and emphasized the critical importance of diversity in public-sector leadership. Drawing upon his own experience as the son of Vietnamese refugees, District Attorney Ho underscored the vital role of representation in ensuring that all communities are effectively served.
The event highlighted the continued commitment of both offices to honoring the rich and diverse history of Placer and Sacramento counties and strengthening community partnerships.
NAPIPA extends its sincere appreciation to High-Hand Nursery owner Scott Paris for his generous support. The Café and Gardens provided an exceptionally beautiful setting. Special thanks are also extended to Café Manager Erin and her entire staff for their patience, attentiveness, and gracious service. NAPIPA further expresses its gratitude to District Attorneys Morgan Gire and Thien Ho for their generous contributions, as well as to Drs. Randy Ow and Jackie Ho for their support of the organization.
