11.4.16 NAPIPA Presents: Ethics in the Practice of Criminal Law, Cal Western School of Law, San Diego, CA

On November 4, 2016 NAPIPA held a panel entitled "Ethics in the Practice of Criminal Law" at Cal Western School of Law in San Diego.  


We were honored to have California Supreme Court Justice Goodwin Liu, San Diego District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis, San Diego Public Defender Henry Coker, and Judge Margie Woods join us to answer various questions from NAPIPA President Paul Jhin in the practice of criminal law including ethics, implicit bias, body cameras on police officers, and media/public pressure on judges regarding sentencing.


The discussion was heard by a capacity crowd of 130 people who were able to hear from these great legal minds. 

Thank You for Supporting Our 3rd Annual Scholarship Banquet!

On October 21, 2016 NAPIPA held its 3rd Annual Scholarship Banquet at the Center at the Cathedral, Los Angeles, California.  The event was a huge success as lawyers, judges, law students, and elected officials filled the hall to hear our three wonderful speakers:

Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey

California State Treasurer John Chiang


NAPIPA also proudly handed out awards to the Honorable James Brandlin for Judge of the Year and Jacob Yim for Prosecutor of the Year.


NAPIPA gave $1500 scholarships to each of our NAPIPA - C.C. Yin for Justice Scholarship recipients to Danny Lee and Abraham Matsui.


During dinner the guests were entertained by taiko drummers Yuujou Daiko and partied the night away to the hip hop stylings of DJ Alex Gomez.


NAPIPA congratulates the award winners and scholarship recipients.  We also would like to thank everyone for supporting NAPIPA and attending the banquet.

8.6.16 NAPIPA Sends Condolensces to Family of SD Police Officer Jonathan DeGuzman

On August 6, 2016, NAPIPA's San Diego chapter co-sponsored a table at the San Diego Pan Pacific Law Enforcement Association's Summer Luau & Fundraiser to benefit the family of fallen San Diego Police Department Officer Jonathan DeGuzman. Officer DeGuzman, who immigrated to the U.S. from the Philippines, was shot and killed in the line of duty on July 28, 2016. Several NAPIPA members attended the luau to honor Officer DeGuzman and to support the law enforcement community as a whole.

5.20.16 NAPIPA Co-Sponsored "So You Want To Be A Judge?" 

NAPIPA proudly co-sponsored "So You Want To Be A Judge?" event with the California Women Lawyers on Friday, May 20, 2016 at the California Supreme Court Building in San Francisco.  The event included Josh Groban, Senior Adviser to Governor Jerry Brown, and many Bay Area judges who offered insights and advice on the judicial appointment process.

5.18.16 NAPIPA Co-Sponsored Reenactment, San Diego, CA

On May 18, 2016, NAPIPA co-sponsored a historical reenactment of Chy Lung v. Freeman with the Pan Asian Lawyers of San Diego.  The reenactment brought together trial transcripts, briefs and historical photographs to tell the story of 22 Chinese women who were barred from immigrating to the United States in 1874 based on the assumption that they were prostitutes.  The cast was composed of five judges and 15 local attorneys, including SD NAPIPA Board Member Mark Cumba.  Over 75 attorneys, judges and law students attended the reenactment, which concluded with a cocktail reception.

On Thursday March 31, 2016, NAPIPA, Seattle University School of Law and their Asian Pacific Islander Student Law Association co-sponsored a Careers in Criminal Law panel held at Courtroom in Sullivan Hall.  Pictured from left to right: Senior Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Jimmy Hung (King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office),  Assistant City Attorney Andrew Tsoming (Seattle City Attorney's Office), APILSA's Cole Barga and Jessica So, Police Legal Adviser Melissa Chin (Bellevue Police Department).

3.24.16 NAPIPA Celebrates 1-Year Anniversary of the San Diego Chapter

On March 24, 2016, San Diego NAPIPA members celebrated the chapter’s one-year anniversary at a local bar and restaurant.  The San Diego chapter was founded on March 2, 2015.

On February 19, 2016 NAPIPA members were honored with the opportunity to speak with California Assemblymember Evan Low.  Assemblymember Low serves on the Committee on Public Safety and we were able to discuss public safety issues.

1.22.16 NAPIPA and SCCDA Proudly Presented "Keeping Your Family Safe"

On January 22, 2016 NAPIPA and the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office held a community event from noon to 2:30 pm at the Tully Community Branch Library.  NAPIPA members and DDAs Oanh Tran and HaNhi Tran, victim advocates, and survivors of domestic violence discussed legal and immigration questions surrounding domestic violence and sexual assault.  Vietnamese interpreters were present to translate for Vietnamese speakers.
